What is an anode rod?
An anode rod, or sacrificial anode rod, is a long metal rod that runs down the storage tank’s center. It is usually made from aluminum, magnesium, or zinc, wrapped around a steel wire core. An anode rod’s primary purpose is to protect the inside of the water heater tank from rust. Anode rods are not permanent and will require replacement eventually.
The most common type of anode rod is a magnesium anode rod. As they corrode quickly, magnesium anode rods are more suitable for homes with soft water. They are affordable and last longer than aluminum rods. Aluminum anode rods work better for homes with high pH and hard water. The zinc and aluminum blend anode rods are suitable for homes where the water is with sulfurous odor. These aluminum-blend rods have only 10% zinc, which helps prevent the rotten egg-like smell.

A water heater’s metal storage tank may rust and corrode due to heat and minerals or other substances in the water. An anode rod prevents the water heater tank from premature corrosion by protecting it from the damaging corrosive elements present in water. The metals in the anode rods use electrolysis to attract harmful particles like sediments and minerals responsible for corrosion. In other words, the anode rod sacrifices itself to extend the water heater’s life and enhance its performance. As the anode rod wears down with time, it becomes essential to inspect it regularly and replace it when necessary to prevent severe damage to the tank and avoid costly repair.
How often to replace the anode rod
Water heater anode rods need regular inspection and replacement. Call an experienced plumber to check the anode rod annually. Usually, an anode rod requires replacement every 3 to five years. However, the lifespan of an anode rod depends on several factors, including water quality, pH level, anode rod material, water heater maintenance, and household water usage. Replacing the anode rod is essential when it degrades, as failing to do so will allow the corrosive elements to damage the tank walls and accelerate the failure process.
Signs of anode rod failure
An anode rod may exhibit some warning signs indicating it is going bad. Some of the indicators include:

The water fails to heat up to the right temperature
The water heater is over five years old
